Container Palms and Other Ornamentals

Although we are mainly a field nursery, we grow a few items in containers such as Arboricola and Mexican Bluebells.  And occasionally, we also find good deals on other potted plants and trees.

 Adonidia Palm

Adonidia merrilli, formerly Veithchia merrilli

 

 

 

  • - aka Dwarf Royal or Christmas Palm

  • - Long fronds with broad, flat leaflets

  • - Solid or ringed trunks with bright green crownshaft, can plant as single or multiples 

  • - Females produce very showy red fruit in winter

  • - Full sun to partial shade, slow to moderate growth, 12-15 ft. at maturity

  • - Somewhat cold-hardy but frost can be harmful

  • - Medium salt resistance, high drought tolerance

  • - Pest resistant; lethal yellowing disease can kill

 

 

 Coconut Palm

Cocos nucifera

  • - Long, green to yellowish-green leaf stalks with tapering leaflets

  • - Solitary gray trunks, commonly curved to varying degrees

  • - Prefers full sun, moderate growth, over 50 ft. at maturity

  • - Not cold-hardy, frost can be very damaging

  • - Excellent salt resistance, high drought tolerance

  • - Renowned for its usefulness - the delicious fruit is also used to produce oil for margarine, soap and candles; the leaves are used for thatching and weaving; the trunk can be used for timber; the fibers of the seed husk can be used for doormats; and the stalks of the seeds can be tapped to obtain a sugary sap and fermented to make alcoholic beverages!

 

 

 Washington Palm

Washingtonia robusta

  • - Broad, fan-shaped fronds on long stalks

  • - Solid, robust solitary trunks

  • - Full sun to partial shade, rapid growth, can reach heights of over 60 ft. at maturity

  • - Very cold-hardy, can occasionally withstand temperatures into the 20's

  • - Medium salt tolerance, high drought tolerance

  • - Produces white, somewhat showy flowers

  • - Spiny, clumping succulent

  • - Solid 

  • - Full sun

  • - Somewhat cold-hardy

  • - Low salt resistance, medium drought tolerance
