Field Grown Palms and Trees

Currently, the majority of our farm is planted with Queen and Pygmy Date palms.  However, we also have a few other things like Canary Island Dates, Washingtonias, European Fans and Ligustrum trees.

Most of our customers like to wander the field to pick out their own trees.  When an order is placed we usually dig the tree the day before delivery.  The tree's root ball is wrapped in burlap to protect until it can be replanted.

Queen Palm
Syagrus romanzoffiana

Queen Palms are sturdy palms thought to be originally  from Brazil.  Fronds of larger specimens grow to 15 feet in length.  Flowers are creamy white, the fruit is deep orange, and both can be quite showy.  Regular applications of manganese help prevent 'frizzletop' and improve growth.  Queen palms are versatile and often planted in groupings or used to line driveways.

Characteristics

  • - Long, graceful, feathery fronds

  • - Solid to lightly ringed gray trunks, usually single but multiples not uncommon

  • - Rapid growth, 30-40 ft. tall at maturity, full sun to partial shade

  • - Endures occasional wet soil, moderately cold-hardy, salt and drought resistant

PYGMY DATE PALM

Phoenix roebellini

Originally from Laos, Pygmy Date Palms are small, graceful palms with slender trunks that are usually narrowest at the base.  The glossy green fronds of mature palms are long and drape downward.  Both males and females produce cream-colored, tiny flowers. Pygmy Date Palms are quite ornamental and look great in a wide variety of settings.  They can also do quite well indoors in a sunny location.

Characteristics

  • - Long, graceful, feathery fronds

  • - Textured brown to gray trunks, singles and multiples common

  • - Full sun to partial shade, slow growth, about 12 ft. at maturity

  • - Somewhat cold-hardy but frost can be harmful

  • - Low salt resistance, medium drought tolerance

  • - Needs regular feedings to look its best

 Washington Palm

Washingtonia robusta

  • - Broad, fan-shaped fronds on long stalks

  • - Solid, robust solitary trunks

  • - Full sun to partial shade, rapid growth, can reach heights of over 60 ft. at maturity

  • - Very cold-hardy, can occasionally withstand temperatures into the 20's

  • - Medium salt tolerance, high drought tolerance

  • - Produces white, somewhat showy flowers
